Sustainable Compassion

A capacity for genuine compassion is one of the driving forces behind many healthcare professionals. Yet the nurture and sustainability in well-motivated individuals remains deeply challenging amidst the complex demands of modern healthcare. This course will be suitable for health and social care professionals who wish to deepen their understanding of the complexities of the concept of compassion.

Canon Dr Margaret Whipp

Chaplain for Cancer Services at the Churchill Hospital

Canon Dr Margaret Whipp is an Anglican priest, spiritual writer and a former consultant oncologist.

Kate Butcher
Education Lead

Kate Butcher is the Education Lead for OxCERPC and plans and delivers a wide range of study opportunities for staff from local and national audiences. She is a Registered Nurse with a background in District Nursing and Practice Development, and continues to work clinically within Sobell House hospice.

Becky Fletcher
Complementary Therapist

Becky Fletcher has a background of teaching aromatherapy, massage and many other therapies.

Sarah Curtis
Ward Sister

In 2009 Sarah was appointed Ward Sister on the Oncology Ward in Oxford, building a stable team focussed on the highest delivery of compassionate care both to patients and colleagues. In 2015 Sarah was invited to represent the Surgery and Oncology Division during the extensive trust European recruitment campaign and was then responsible for providing pastoral care, induction and training to those nurses that joined the division. Sarah is currently the Divisional Lead for practice development and Education and is particularly passionate about the support, empowerment and development of staff to enable them to deliver front line services.

Course Aims

This day will help participants to:

  • Appreciate the depth and wisdom of their own resources of compassion
  • Extend awareness to the arts and science of compassion
  • Understand subtleties within compassionate team working
  • Develop a capacity for greater self-compassion
  • Experience hand massage as an expression of compassionate concern
  • Gain new reflective skills to use individually and with groups
