Advanced Ethics in Palliative and End of Life Care
As healthcare practitioners, we are faced with ethical dilemmas and difficult decisions on a daily basis. What to do when there is a conflict between what the patient wishes to do and what their family thinks should be done? How do we navigate a difference in opinion in our team about what a good death looks like? We must examine facts, balance alternatives and think through complex issues.
This conference will provide you with an opportunity to build your confidence, will enhance your skills and help you to develop strategies for dealing with difficult situations. By considering, discussing and debating a number of ethical dilemmas with others, you will increase your knowledge and learn how best to apply this knowledge and your enhanced skills to your practice.
Your employer will gain from this as you bring your enhanced skills back to your workplace, helping patients directly and also indirectly as you transfer knowledge and skills to your colleagues.
Our Advanced Ethics course seeks to build on the ethics course run by the APM, although attendance at the APM course is not a requirement. This advanced course looks at philosophical topics relating to palliative medicine and examines ethical issues more widely. Accessible speakers from the clinical and academic world are asked to speak on a variety of topics – with different subjects each year.
Audience: Palliative care specialists (multi-disciplinary), healthcare practitioners with an interest in ethics, ethicists.
Educational Credits: Reapplying to RCP as prior approval was for 6 points.

Professor Dominic Wilkinson Director of Medical Ethics and Professor of Medical Ethics at the Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics, University of Oxford
Professor Derek Willis Vice-chair, Ethics Committee, Association for Palliative Medicine
Derek Willis is Medical Director at Severn Hospice (Shropshire and Mid Wales) and an Honorary Chair at the University of Chester in Bioethics and Palliative Medicine. At present he is working in partnership with Robert Jones Agnes Hunt Hospital and Muscular Dystrophy UK to explore what palliative medicine provision should be for adult patients with muscular dystrophies. He has been part of a governmental review at the House of Lords concerning this.
Derek is both GP and Physician trained and has worked in New Zealand, the Midlands and the North East. He teaches medical ethics at three universities and has a higher qualification as well as a research interest in the subject. He is academic representative on the WMCares research collaborative.
He is currently Treasurer of the APM and is on their Ethics Committee.
