Teaching the Teachers

Emma Shaw – Clinical Educator at the Churchill Hospital in Day Treatment Unit

Emma attended this course in November 2025

Before attending the Teaching the Teachers course my main expectation was to gain more confidence in structuring and delivering teaching, in particular online sessions as these have become more widespread since the pandemic. I haven’t had much experience teaching online and had some reservations about how to engage the learners with this format of teaching and how to gain participation throughout the teaching.

Since attending the Teaching the Teachers course, my approach to teaching both face to face and online has really benefitted from the skills and experience that the course gave me. The practice teaching sessions both face to face and online gave me the chance to take a bite sized topic and really explore the best way of teaching a little mock up lesson in both formats. I was so grateful to be able to experience delivering a fact to face and online lesson to piers and then receive feedback for things that had gone well and things I could look at to improve my approach in the future. Learning in a safe space with a small group of like-minded colleagues really helped as we found that throughout these sessions we were learning so much from each other and it was also reassuring to find that several people had the same concerns and lack of experience with online teaching than I did. I enjoyed working with delegates from completely different clinical areas and beyond nursing as this really gave the group variety and interest.

I think the biggest takeaway I have from the Teaching the Teachers course is that online teaching isn’t nearly as intimidating as I thought it would be and I actually enjoyed it after I got over my initial mental block. I liked the suggestion of having post it notes around my computer screen with reminders and prompts to help me remember things without looking away at notes. It made me feel more engaged with the learners.

If I had to describe the course in a few words I would say enlightening, practical and fun. Kate, Bee and Mel packed so much into two days and were so supportive of everyone and were fantastic facilitators. I am still revisiting the course information now and incorporating new things into my teaching, especially elements to make any education sessions I deliver more suitable to neurodiverse learners. I would certainly recommend this course to anyone who delivers education as part of their role. Aspects of the course were challenging and I found myself out of my comfort zone several times, but I am grateful for this taking place in such a supportive learning environment as it has benefitted me so much.

Due to the success of our pilot course, we are excited to bring it back again for 2026! Book now with us: https://www.sobelleducation.org.uk/product/teaching-the-teachers-november-2026/
