General Medicine for Palliative Care Physicians
Dr C – Clinical Physician
Dr C has attended the course for over 5 years
The General Medicine for Palliative Care Physicians course at Oxford has become a regular fixture in my calendar. Over the years, it’s been a source of invaluable learning and professional connection, especially in a field where many of us work in relative isolation, often without junior doctors in our teams due to funding constraints.
Before attending, I was curious about what the course would offer. As a doctor who has spent most of my career in DGH and hospice, I haven’t had huge access to research opportunities and have concentrated on the practical delivery of care and teaching. Good courses that help to inform me regarding research based clinical updates are therefore very sought after and invaluable for enabling me to practise in an evidence based and safe fashion. The course, curated by Dr Mary Miller and her team, consistently delivers well-thought-out, research informed sessions that address the common and complex issues we face daily—heart failure, respiratory diseases, and much more. Each speaker is clearly briefed on our needs, making the content directly relevant to our work.
The biggest impact for me has been the opportunity to update my knowledge in a concentrated, accessible way. For example, learning about the differences between reduced and preserved ejection fraction in heart failure was a true “aha” moment. It clarified so much about patient management and has influenced my practice ever since. These golden nuggets of information are what make the course feel like an annual gift—something I look forward to unwrapping each year.
Beyond the lectures, the course fosters a sense of community. Hearing questions from experienced peers stimulates my curiosity and enhances my learning. It’s beneficial for both seasoned consultants and those newer to the specialty, as the discussions consolidate knowledge and expose us to new perspectives.
The resource page, with presentations and slides, is a valuable supplement. Being able to revisit lectures and access materials at my own pace has been especially helpful, given the demands of our roles and personal circumstances. The resources support not only my clinical work but also my teaching responsibilities.
I wholeheartedly recommend the General Medicine course. Whether you’re just starting out or have years of experience, there’s always something new to learn. The course is reasonably priced, thoughtfully organised, and consistently beneficial. I plan to attend every year until I retire—and perhaps even beyond!
